Carl Dorton, ENP

McClennan County 911 District

9-1-1 Background: Carl has spent 30 years in the Public Safety arena, 16 of those years within the fire service area.   He served in the ranks from fire fighter and that of Fire Marshal and finally Chief of the Big Spring Fire Department.   During his tenure as a fire fighter he held certifications of “Advanced Fire Fighter”, “Intermediate Peace Officer” as well as “Arson Investigator”. 

Carl assisted in developing a “9-1-1 District in Howard County, TX” and was named Executive Director of the Howard County Emergency Communication District in June of 1988.

In June of 1996 he accepted and currently holds the position of Executive Director for the McLennan County 9-1-1 Emergency Assistance District. 

NENA, APCO, NASNA, CITA involvement: Within the 9-1-1 professional organization “NENA”, in 1998, he tested for and currently holds an “ENP” (Emergency Number Professional) certification.  He along with 112 other 9-1-1 Professionals were the first group to take and past the original ENP test.  He has been a member of NENA since 1988.  He has been a member of APCO since 1996.

Community involvement: Sits on the board of the McLennan County Chapter of the McLennan County American Heart Assoc., a member of the Lions Founders Club of Waco, member of the McLennan County Fire Protection Association, Curriculum Advisory Board to the Texas State Technical College, Central Texas Council of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Coordinator and advisory liaison to the Consolidations Communications Committee of McLennan County.

Personal:  Active with friends and family.  Realizing all work and no time for family makes Carl a dull boy.  He and Sheila his wife of 35 years have four children.  Three are out of college and on their own, which was and is a major life goal for him.  The fourth child is a junior in high school.  Sheila and Carl are looking forward to their first grand child due the end of August this year.
