NENA RECOGNIZES 9-1-1 EDUCATION IN WASHINGTONSTATE
The Washington Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association(NENA) hosted Michelle Moore of Snohomish County at its annualluncheon May 1 in Moses Lake. Moore, a telecommunicator with SNOPAC, is the first recipientof NENA’s Washington Chapter’s newly created 9-1-1 EducationProgram of the Year Award.
Assistant Professor of Communications and award reviewer RobertFordan, Central Washington University, Ellensburg indicated thatMoore’s undertaking was massive. “In fact, when I first beganto look over the materials, I told myself that I was not goingto be swayed by the mere volume,” Fordan commented. “However,once I began to review them, I realized that there were not onlymany materials, but that they were excellently prepared.”He reviewed materials for public dissemination and for training.”The displays, captured in photographs, were eye catching.The materials were easy to understand,” he noted.
Jackie Lorca-Merono, a telecommunicator with the Multi AgencyCommunications Center, Moses Lake and the other award judge, chooseMoore’s contributions because it “… addresses children,adults, handicapped and citizens who speak foreign languages.”She added, the program “… shares past experience and knowledgewith other professionals by providing instruction on how to conductskits, how to teach in a classroom, and provides materials thatcan be used during these classroom experiences.”
The third evaluator was Josie Williams, training coordinator forKing County Fire District 10, Issaquah. The judges strongly believed9-1-1 professionals and Washington citizens benefitted from Moore’squality work. The judges assessed each nominee’s program goals,content, description of targeted audiences, and supporting programmaterials. Nominations were for public education materials distributedin 1996.
Five education programs were submitted for consideration. Thenominees included Michelle Moore, SNOPAC, Everett, Snohomish County;Pegi Donahue, Spokane County E911; Marlys Davis, Hariett Burns,Colleen Boyns of King County E911 and Roselynne Duvait-Pasionof Roz & Co., King County; Alan Abe, Emergency Medical ServicesDivision, King County; Christine Buchholz, Robert Roth, JanelStromme, Community Service Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing,Seattle and G. Leon Curtis, DSHS State Office of the Deaf andHard of Hearing.
Moore showcased her education program to approximately 25, 9-1-1professionals at the annual NENA luncheon. Moore’s 9-1-1 educationcontributions in Washington state were recognized with a framedcertificate and a plaque.
